On large earthworks projects, excavation is rarely the limiting factor. Managing water usually is.

At this quarry development, ROQ carried out early-stage works to establish a new silt settlement pond before stripping operations advanced across the site.

The objective was to create the capacity required to control surface water, runoff and suspended fines as excavation progressed.

Without this infrastructure in place, rainfall and runoff would quickly compromise production areas and slow program progress.

The challenge

Quarry developments often involve large areas of exposed ground where rainfall and runoff can quickly disrupt earthmoving operations.

On this site, stripping works could not advance until a suitable system for controlling surface water and suspended fines was established. Without settlement capacity in place, runoff would quickly turn working areas into sediment management problems.

Maintaining stable ground conditions while excavation progressed required careful sequencing of the initial works.

The solution

ROQ prioritised the creation of settlement capacity before advancing the main strip.

The team excavated a new silt settlement pond designed to manage runoff and capture suspended material as stripping progressed across the site.

Operations were carefully sequenced to maintain safe and workable ground conditions:

  • Establish settlement capacity before large-scale stripping began
  • Maintain access routes while excavation progressed
  • Separate water flow from active working areas
  • Preserve safe working platforms on constantly changing ground conditions


By creating controlled drainage and settlement infrastructure first, the team ensured the site could continue operating even during periods of rainfall.

With water management infrastructure in place early, stripping operations were able to progress without disruption from runoff or sediment build-up.
